THE NBFC ARTIST OF THE WEEK FOR NB IS... VISUAL ARTIST WERNER ARNOLD
An adventurous spirit brought Werner to Canada from Switzerland in the sixties. Settling in Toronto, he pursued his interest in visual arts by studying graphic art and interior design. Through working in these areas he discovered a passion for woodworking which he pursued ardently, quickly developing his own unique, highly imaginative style. The pieces evolved from simple painted wooden props to today's' trademark intricately carved polished fantastic creations, incorporating appliqués and the use of elaborate washes of brilliant colour. As his work evolved, he received numerous awards from the Ontario artistic scene.
In 1994 he moved to the East Coast, eventually settling in Fredericton in 2002. His work has been exhibited across North America and in Europe and is included in private and corporate collections around the world.

FREDERICTON - HOWARD ZINN'S MARX IN SOHO TO BE PERFORMED AT BLACK BOX THEATRE SEPTEMBER 4-7
The Fredericton and District Labour Council is proud to present a production of Howard Zinn's acclaimed one-man play Marx in Soho at the Black Box Theatre, St. Thomas University, from September 4-7, 2014.
Written in 1997 and performed around the world, Zinn's play imagines Karl Marx coming back to life to tell stories about his family and writing career, and to dispel certain myths and misinterpretations that have emerged around his ideas. "I'm not a Marxist," he insists, yet he speaks forcefully but intimately about the social and economic inequalities that continue to plague western society. Humorous, wistful, and passionate in defence of the oppressed, Zinn's Marx is an inspirational figure to spend an evening with. As New Brunswickers prepare for an election, he has some timely and provocative things to say.
Starring NBFC member Jeff Bate Boerop and directed by John Ball, Marx in Soho offers a compelling portrait of one of the most influential thinkers of the modern era. Performances are at 7:30pm from Thursday to Saturday, September 4-6, and at 2pm on Sunday, September 7. Admission is by free-will donation. The opening-night performance will be followed by a panel discussion and talk-back session on the question "Is Marx relevant today?"

FREDERICTON - THE FREDERICTON ARTS ALLIANCE PRESENTS AN ALL-PARTY ELECTION FORUM TO DISCUSS THE ARTS
WHEN: September 10th, 7pm-9pm
WHERE: Charlotte Street Arts Centre, 732 Charlotte Street, Fredericton.
The Fredericton Arts Alliance has organized an all-party election forum on arts issues for Wednesday, September 10 from 7 to 9pm at the Charlotte Street Arts Centre. Each of the five registered political parties in New Brunswick has been invited to send a candidate. Five questions have been circulated in advance to the parties, but a lively format will permit further questions from the floor.
Goose Lane Editions Publisher Suzanne Alexander will moderate the discussion, allowing each candidate a brief introductory statement. Each question will be directed to a single candidate – chosen by draw – with two other candidates offered an opportunity to rebut or elaborate on the issues raised. Each party will be able to respond to two of the five questions, with closing comments allowing candidates time to add their views where they did not have an opportunity during the questions.
Questions from the floor will be dealt with in a similar manner, directed to a single candidate with two others being able to join the discussion. The session will close with refreshments and an opportunity for informal discussion with the candidates.
