THE NBFC ARTIST OF THE WEEK FOR NB IS... VISUAL ARTIST GUY VÉZINA
Guy Vézina was born in Montréal in 1961. He trained as an occupational therapist in Kingston Ontario and moved to the Atlantic Provinces in 1986 to work as a therapist and explore the area. He and his spouse settled in Fredericton in 1995.
A life-long art lover, Guy had always drawn and in 1984 he moved from pencil to pastels. In 1987/8, when he took the next step in his development into oil painting, this hobby began to assume greater proportions. Guy began exhibiting works in galleries while living in St-John's NL and started taking part in group shows at Gallery 78 in 1997.
Since 2005, Guy has shared studio space at the Charlotte Street Art Centre. He works in oils, pastels and ink. He is interested in the human figure and in the perception of the natural world. His works can be considered symbolic studies from the viewpoint of a human in the world, or simply as portraits of the picturesque.
ARTIST STATEMENT
I tend to think in images, that is probably why drawing and painting have always been a part of my life. In childhood I developed a fascination with the various plays of light and shadow and it still persists to this day. I love the colours it creates.
Painting is partly one of my ways of learning, of journaling, of sharing, and my form of praise. I seek a balance between controlled and loose marks, thus allowing unconscious elements to spring forth in my paintings. I love works of art where the texture and application of the media is revealed while being integral to the imagery as a whole. For me, Art is the expression of the human soul, its language.
Inspiration comes from many different directions. At times something seen strikes the desire to visually understand it and express what is felt as striking. Then there is an idea, a dream, a memory, or a visual flash, and I work it out through sketches and various photographic sources. Other times, a painting starts from a pattern I see in random marks of leftover paints from my palette.
ECONOMIC FIGURES FOR THE CULTURAL INDUSTRIES
New 2010 economic figures for the cultural industries, arts, heritage and sport are now available online.http://www.statcan.gc.ca/daily-quotidien/140910/dq140910b-eng.htm?HPA
Figures are from the Culture Satellite Account (CSA), a tool designed to measure the economic contribution of the arts, cultural industries, heritage and sport to the Canadian economy. This is the first CSA report to be released publicly by Statistics Canada.
The importance of the culture sector as part of the Canadian economy is reinforced through this work.
The CSA project has been in development since 2008, with provincial/territorial figures due for public release in 2015, and experimental municipal figures for review of funding partners due in 2016. Statistics Canada leads the project, while Canadian Heritage manages a consortium of funding partners, including many CPAF members.
2014 NB ELECTION
Election 2014: Party leaders comment on arts and culture in a series of videos produced by the AAAPNB and ArtsLink NB
Moncton and Saint John, September 4, 2014 - As election campaigning gathers steam, the Association acadienne des artistes professionnel.le.s du Nouveau-Brunswick (AAAPNB) and ArtsLink NB are releasing a series of short videos in which party leaders comment on arts and culture in New Brunswick. In these 60-second videos, produced in both English and French, each leader spells out his party’s commitments with respect to artists, arts and culture.
This initiative will allow citizens to hear each leader outline his party’s vision for the development of arts and culture during the next four years. Both organizations would like to thank David Alward (Progressive Convervative Party), Dominic Cardy (NDP), David Coon (Green Party) and Brian Gallant (Liberal Party) for their participation in this project.
The videos were recorded via internet and can be seen at www.youtube.com/aaapnb and on the homepages of AAAPNB: www.aaapnb.ca and Artslink NB : www.artslinknb.ca .
It is important to bear in mind that during the past year, both organizations met with each of the four parties to support the following:
Recognition of the artist as a professional (the Premier’s Working Group on the Status of the Artist began its work in June, 2014)
Revision of the Cultural Policy (adopted in June, 2014)
In each of the next four years, a $4-million increase to the budget of arts, culture, and heritage, to implement the recommendations of the revised Cultural Policy (an initial increase of $3 million was approved in February, 2014)
The AAAPNB and ArtsLink NB would like to remind New Brunswickers of the important contribution arts and culture make to our province. The sector facilitates dialogue among our various communities, plays an important role in the education of our youth, has a positive effect on our collective well-being, and encourages a higher level of citizen participation. In 2010, the sectorbrought $910 million to the provincial economy (MQO Research 2012). In May 2014, 11,800 workers were employed in New Brunswick’s information, culture, and leisure sector, which is higher than that of, forestry, fishing, mining/related extractive industries, and as well as oil and gas combined. (Statistics Canada, Table 282-2010). In addition, 99.7% of New Brunswickers took part in at least one artistic, cultural, or heritage activity in 2010 (Hill Strategies Research, 2012).
The AAAPNB and ArtsLink NB encourage all media outlets to include discussion of arts and culture in the televised leaders’ debates.
