Funding for Canadian Women Screenwriters
Matthew Miller and Matt Johnson are starting a screenwriting program for women using our Zapruder Films slate development funding from Telefilm.
The details are linked below, but the basic idea is we're trying to counteract the insane gender imbalance Telefilm propagates with the way they distribute funding. Hopefully by redistributing their money ourselves we can start to slowly make space for Canadian women to participate in the nationally funded film industry in a more equitable way.
Zapruder Films receives the absolute lowest development funding available, but it's our hope that this program will encourage much larger production companies (with MUCH more funding) to join this initiative, assigning 100% of their Telefilm development funding to women writer/directors over the next year. (Come on Serendipity, what's the worse that could happen?)

HALIFAX JOB OPPORTUNITY
Halifax Independent Filmmakers Festival - Programming Committee Call for Applications
AFCOOP is accepting applications from the community for 3 positions on the Halifax Independent Filmmakers Festival (HIFF) Programming Committee 2017. HIFF is a boutique festival dedicated to showcasing bold, innovative film and media art from the Atlantic region and around the world. HIFF takes place over the course of 4-5 days in early June in a community theatre setting. The festival includes evening screenings, receptions, celluloid installations, daytime masterclasses with visiting filmmakers and one-on-one meetings between local filmmakers and guest programmers from Canadian and International festivals.
The HIFF Programming Committee will meet monthly from October 2016 - June 2017, with discussion via email and additional meetings as the festival approaches. The committee will be responsible for programming the main film and media art content of HIFF 2017 in collaboration with AFCOOP staff.
Committee work in advance of the festival will include: researching, pre-screening; pitching ideas to the group; working with community presentation partners; and writing screening notes for the program guide and related print and online material generated by the festival. During the festival, committee members will introduce screenings, host Q&As and act as HIFF’s ambassadors to visiting artists.
Qualifications
- Knowledge of and love for independent cinema. This knowledge could be in a broad film history sense or in a specific genre or sub-set.
- Familiarly with HIFF and the type of work that the festival has presented in the past.
- Excellent communication skills, the ability to work collaboratively with the committee and AFCOOP staff and a willingness to balance the needs of the broader community with personal interests.
*Note about qualifications - AFCOOP is committed to developing new voices in film programming. It is not a requirement for applicants to have programmed or curated film or media art screenings in the past. A sincere interest in programming and a willingness to learn are much more important.
Remuneration
This position will be paid an honorarium of $1,200 and will be eligible to accrue up to 10hrs /month in AFCOOP volunteer hours. Volunteer hours can be put towards AFCOOP Full Membership requirements and in-kind equipment rental.

In the letter of interest please list 3 remarkable independent films you’ve seen in the recent past (shorts or features) and describe what makes them stand out.
