PRESERVING YOUR INDIE FILMS AT THE PROVINCIAL ARCHIVES

Instructor: Joanna Aiton Kerr
Location: Provincial Archives of New Brunswick Exhibit Room, 23 Dineen Drive
Fredericton, NB, See map: Google Maps
FREE!
Class Limit: 30
Once a film has completed its festival run and been streamed on YouTube, filmmakers are often unsure what to do with the film to ensure its long term preservation. Due to the unstable nature of digital records and the ever changing landscape of technology, if filmmakers are not proactive in preservation valuable information may be lost. The Provincial Archives of New Brunswick is mandated “to discover, collect and preserve records having any bearing upon the history of New Brunswick” (Archives Act) and is currently working with the NBFC to ensure the history independent film community is preserved and made available for researchers for years to come.
At this session, you will learn about how the Archives works, how you can donate materials, what sort of materials you can donate, and how you can receive a tax receipt for your donations. Also learn about copyright laws, your right to privacy, retaining ownership of your film after making a donation, and ask any questions you may have on the process. You will also be given a short tour of the Archives including the Audio/Visual Lab, the Conservation Lab, and the Repository where the records are stored.
We will also be screening some Film Co-op short films currently stored in the PANB vault including The Vacationers, The Man Who Skied Citadel Hill, and Smoke.
HOST BIOGRAPHY
Joanna Aiton Kerr is the Manager of Services and Private Sector Records at the Provincial Archives of New Brunswick. A graduate of the Masters of Archival Studies program at the University of British Columbia, Joanna has held various positions in the archives field, including Congregational Archivist for the Sisters of Charity of Saint Vincent de Paul in Halifax, and University Records Manager for the University of New Brunswick. She is the past-president of the Council of Archives New Brunswick. Joanna lives in Fredericton with her husband, two daughters, two dogs and a cat.
Established in 1967, the Provincial Archives of New Brunswick collects and preserves the documents of the people, institutions and government of the province. Most of the holdings are for the period from 1784, when New Brunswick was made a separate province of British North America. However, some materials relating to the earlier exploration, Acadian and pre-Loyalist periods have also been acquired. Under provincial legislation the Archives has responsibility to assemble, and to make available for research, records bearing upon the history of New Brunswick. The Records Management Program ensures the regular transfer and archival retention of all non-current government records that have permanent legal and historical value. The records of individuals, churches, businesses and associations are acquired through donation of original material, and loans for copying. The documents in the Archives are provincial treasures. Many are fundamental in protecting the rights and interests of the people, or are essential for understanding and preserving our heritage and culture. Materials which are not in archives, particularly those in danger of being lost or destroyed, should be brought to the attention of the Archives staff.

BORN TO BE BLUE
97 mins, USA/Canada/UK, 2015, English
The Monday Night Film Series presents "BORN TO BE BLUE", on Monday September 12th at 7:30pm in Tilley 102, UNB.
Born to be Blue is not a traditional biopic but a reimagining of jazz trumpeter Chet Baker's life in the 60's. When Chet stars in a film about himself, a romance heats up with the female lead, the enigmatic Jane. Production is shelved when Chet's past comes back to haunt him and it appears he may never play music again.
Ethan Hawke gives one of the best performances of his career in Robert Budreau's Chet Baker non-biopic. - Andrew Barker, Variety
Surprisingly, and successfully, it becomes a love story. Hawke and Ejogo have phenomenal chemistry, as she plays Jane more as a stabilizer than a savior. – Brian Tallerico, RogerEbert.com
This year, 30 limited release, independent foreign & Canadian films will be shown. Admission is $7/film, but a yearly $18 student film society membership reduces admission cost to $4/film. The series is open to all. Memberships are available at Tilley 102 every Monday night.

Outside the Box: New Brunswick Film Tour: A selection of outstanding films screened at the Silver Wave Film Festival
Origin of the Silver Wave Film Festival
Due to a lack of exhibition opportunities for local media artists to showcase their work, the New Brunswick Filmmakersʼ Co-op launched a provincial film screening event in 2001 called the Silver Wave Film Festival. The initiative received universal acclaim from participants delighted at the audience engagement with their work and the collegial nature of the gathering of filmmakers from around the province.
Call for Submissions process
The programming for the festival takes place in several phases. A call for submissions is sent out 8 months prior to the event. In addition to the submitted films, programmers also invite films to be part of the festival. The mission of the festival is to showcase the best New Brunswick films, and at least 50% of the films screened each year are produced within the province. Although it might be more advantageous to invite celebrated films from away and build an audience from films that already “sell themselves”, the Silver Wave takes pride in celebrating our own local stars, and nurturing a culture of “local films first”. This strategy has taken hold, as the most popular films at the festival are not the films from away, but rather the locally made works. The programming for the past few Silver Wave Film Festivals has included a diverse selection of films from across the Province including short dramas, comedies, documentaries, animations and experimental films.
Film Tour Project
Outside the Box is a provincial film tour comprised of the best films screened at the Silver Wave Film Festival over the past 5 years. The tour has been made possible by a grant from the Province of New Brunswickʼs Department of Tourism, Heritage and Culture and through the generous support of local sponsors in the communities hosting these screenings with us.
New Brunswick Filmmakersʼ Co-op
Besides undertaking the annual Silver Wave Film Festival, the Film Co-op is also involved in many other filmic activities. It offers film-training workshops in Fredericton, Saint John and Moncton. It houses a full range of professional filmmaking equipment available to its membership base, which spans the entire province. It carries out several production programs including a 48 hour film competition and provides cash grants and equipment deferrals to projects year-round. Based in Fredericton, the Co-op is eager to help emerging and established filmmakers produce locally-based films, and see the development of thriving communities in all corners of the province.
