SPOTLIGHT - THE CAPITAL PROJECT
The Capital – a web series (created by Tim Rayne and Arthur Thomson)
Urban myths and local stories are the backdrop in the upcoming web series, The Capital set in Fredericton, New Brunswick. The main character is the Capital Complex – a well-known three story bar located in the heart of Fredericton’s Downtown that is made up of the Wilser’s Room (pub), the Phoenix (dance bar), and the Capital (live venue).
The Capital is inspired by the amazing music scene that has existed for years in New Brunswick. From rock, pop, blue grass, hip hop, folk, and alternative music genres, there is something for everyone.
The Capital Complex is the premier live music venue in the City. The music scene has been cultivated from the experiences and interactions artists and audiences have shared in the Capital Complex throughout the years. It is known across the country by hundreds of touring artists and audiences made up of locals and University students from abroad.
The web series will provide an opportunity for media artists and musicians from New Brunswick to showcase their work.
The next exciting chapter in the project is their upcoming launch event which will showcase a short teaser to give people a taste of what the longer full length documentary will be like.

CONNECTING MEMBERS - JOHN JIANG, FREDERICTON
Hello everyone, this is John Jiang. I’m a newcomer from Shanghai, China. Fredericton is my new hometown and it is my time to start a new journey.
I am a huge film aficionado and I enjoy all kinds of films. Films always make me curious about how they were made. So, I decided to join the NBFC, to study, to network, to help and discover which field I want to study in film.
I was amazed when I heard about the NBFC and the Silver Wave Film Festival. I am so glad to see New Brunswick films showcased as well as films around the world. I think it is also a good way to learn a new culture and make friends.
To be a volunteer in the Silver Wave Film Festival is my first step and, it will help me get my required volunteer hours in as well as a member. Next, I want to take workshops next year, and help others as soon as possible. Finally, I hope to find the area I am really interested in, in film.

CBC/NB JOY FILM SPOTLIGHTED AT FIN: AFF
"It is our privilege to continue to support the CBC/NB Joy Award. There is so much talent in New Brunswick and, through this award, we are proud to help nurture emerging producers and directors as they build their careers"
Stewart Young - Executive Producer - Arts and Documentary Programming, CBC Atlantic
"I was honoured to receive the NB Joy Award in 2015 to direct Rob Gray’s Chiaroscuro. While I had worked on a number of films in various capacities, this would be my first time directing. I surrounded myself with a talented and supportive crew and got to work immediately. I quickly learned that despite the immense undertaking, I loved directing!
It was incredible to see everything come together during the production process. When Chiaroscuro premiered at the Silver Wave Film Festival in 2016, I was thrilled to experience it through the eyes of the audience. Since then, the film has screened at a number of festivals in North America.
I am proud to say that it will be screening in the Reel East Coast Shorts Gala at the 2017 FIN: Atlantic International Film Festival. All of this would not have been possible without the support of the CBC/NB Joy Award, the NB Film Co-op, Equifilm and Frictive Pictures. I am looking forward to my next big adventure in film." Amy Bourgaize, NB Film Co-op member
"New Brunswick independent filmmakers and video artists need our support, now more then ever," says Tony Merzetti, Executive Director of the New Brunswick Filmmakers Co-op. "With this recent increase in financial support from new sponsor CBC, the NB Joy Award now signifies major grant assistance on many different levels."
The Joy Awards, besides being a recognition of merit, helps emerging filmmakers finish projects which reflect their own creative vision without compromise. These projects help establish their reputation and credibility and provide important networking and contact opportunities, as they build ongoing careers in the field.
The Linda Joy Media Arts Society was established in memory of filmmaker and artist Linda Joy Busby, who died in 1984 after struggling with cancer. The Joy Awards have encouraged and supported the best emerging media arts talent of the Atlantic region for twenty-four years. These Awards provide material and funding to emerging filmmakers and media artists, and script writers.

THE BIG SICK
Michael Showalter
USA, 2017
English, Urdu
120 minutes
Principal Cast: Kumail Nanjiani, Zoe Kazan, Holly Hunter, Ray Romano
Pakistan-born Kumail (Kumail Nanjiani), in the middle of becoming a budding stand-up comedian, meets Emily (Zoe Kazan). Meanwhile, a sudden illness sets in forcing Emily to be put into a medically-induced coma. Kumail must navigate being a comedian, dealing with tragic illness, and placating his family's desire to let them fix him up with a spouse, while contemplating and figuring out who he really is and what he truly believes.
In a summer bereft of original comedies, The Big Sick is not only necessary, it’s downright revolutionary. Here’s a layered, nuanced film whose only goal is to tell a story of real people and real heartache, not to act as a crass marketing plank for a series of hopeful sequels and spinoffs. More than its divorce from the franchise game, though, The Big Sick is refreshing thanks to its on-screen diversity – aside from Master of None, has there ever been a Hollywood product with a brown actor as its romantic lead? – which is wisely played as really not that big of a deal at all.
Kumail Nanjiani lets his natural charisma and hilarity carry the movie, which lightly fictionalizes his real-life courtship with co-writer Emily V. Gordon (played here by Zoe Kazan). There’s a slightly terrifying twist planted along the pair’s path to romance, but it’s handled with a deft level of sincerity by director Michael Showalter and the uniformly excellent cast (including a scene-stealing Ray Romano as Gordon’s father).
"It's a movie that not only puts human imperfections and incongruities on display, but also revels in them." Ann Hornaday Washington Post
