WHEN REBEL FEMMES MAKE FILMS
Kaitlyn Adair, founder of Rebel Femme Productions, is a registered nurse who works in harm reduction and feminist based nursing practice. She is an activist for human rights who uses creativity as a form of personal healing.
Kaitlyn is an NB Film Co-op/WIFT-AT member and is the recipient of the 2017 Jane LeBlanc Filmmaker Award which she received at the recent Silver Wave Film Festival this past November.
Congratulations to Kaitlyn for being short-listed for the Women Making Waves Pitch Competition this year (Presented by CBC).
Our current cultural climate has shone a light onto feminism in film and television. As a society, we are now acutely aware of the disparities women of all backgrounds face both in front of and behind the camera. There is a growing movement of women rebelling against the system, speaking their truth and empowering other women.
Rebel Femme is stepping up to the challenge of incorporating intersectional feminism into community level film. The effects of which can already be felt through the community.
The first production by Rebel Femme is entitled March 2.4 and is a feminist short film about the experience of PTSD after sexual assault. It brings the viewer into this experience while addressing barriers to sexual assault services, sexism, and micro-aggressions women face.
This indie company began with a simple intention, to encourage increased accessibility for women to get involved in film production.
It started by pairing an experienced director with a novice one to promote mentorship and leadership. It realized that mentorship provided a broader opportunity for intersectional feminism and found further places for such in production management, assistant directing, production design and gripping.
Encouraging opportunity is one piece to the dynamic puzzle of stepping into feminism in film. They realized that with the level of awareness the film will bring forth, they must also bring forth space for healing and compassion through community.
On March 24th, 2018, Rebel Femme will be holding a fundraiser for the film at a local yoga studio. The fundraiser will be a community-healing circle with the intention of bringing our collective healing consciousness to survivors of sexual violence both within our community and beyond. Part of the proceeds from the fundraiser will go to the Fredericton Sexual Assault Centre, who provide crucial support to the Fredericton community.
March 2.4 will be shooting in April 2018 in Fredericton. The subject matter of this film will likely be triggering so Kaitlyn Adair, writer/co-director/producer, will be offering Reiki Healing to crew/cast members on set. There will also be space for de-briefing, communication, and connection.
The production will empower intersectional feminism to make it accessible as possible for women of all backgrounds including members of the LQBTQ2S+ community. The locations on set are accessible to community members with disabilities and those members will be supported during production.
The intention of March 2.4 is to raise awareness to the issue of sexualized violence and survivors experiences afterwards. We will use this visual media as a form of education to engage humans in the conversation. We intend to keep the conversations going along with our actions in our communities. After the film has been shot, we intend to create the same space for healing and connection in the community. We realize that awareness at this level comes with a responsibility to hold compassionate space for human beings to consolidate this knowledge for changed behavior.
Rebel Femme encourages women to support other women from a place of compassion, empowerment, and collective strength. We hope that by sharing our small but largely impactful production, that we will encourage others to do the same. If we stand together, we will change the world.

UPDATE YOUR CAST AND CREW PROFILE TODAY!
So you've joined the NB Film Co-op. You've taken a bunch of workshops. You've gone to networking events. But you're still unsure how to actually get involved with a film shoot.
One way to get your name out there is to register for the NB Film Co-op Cast and Crew Profile. It's a database where filmmakers can see a list of members who are able to fill in various cast and crew positions. It's simple to fill out and in no time your name will be made available to all filmmakers who are looking for cast and crew for their upcoming projects. It has recently been modified to allow new members with little or no experience create a profile, and it also allows members to fill in a more complete resume if they wish.
It's also beneficial for our more experienced members too. It is a place where commercial filmmakers can go to search for people to hire for paid shoots, and it gives members a platform to self promote themselves and their work.
So please, take a few minutes to fill out your profile and help the Co-op promote you!
(This benefit is only for Film Co-op members in good standing) - http://nbfilmcoop.com/node/add/cast-crew-database

2018 SHORT FILM VENTURE PROGRAM ANNOUNCED
What is the Short Film Venture Program?
The Short Film Venture Program (SFVP) assists emerging New Brunswick filmmakers who have a serious interest in establishing a career in filmmaking and in producing a “calling card” film.
If you are an emerging filmmaker, one of the ways to make a name for yourself is with a great short film; one that will highlight your talent, be seen and prove to people that you have what it takes.
If you are selected, you will have the chance to train with some of New Brunswick’s well-known filmmakers. In addition, your film could be chosen to showcase, with a premiere screening at a New Brunswick Film Festival.
Who can apply?
- An eligible applicant is an individual who was a resident in New Brunswick for at least one year preceding the application deadline.
- Applicants must maintain creative and financial control over the project and own all copyright in it.
- Applicants are permitted to apply with only one (1) submission per year.
- Previous applicants that were not recipients of a SFVP grant are eligible to apply with new projects only.
-Applicants must take the required film workshops offered by the NB Filmmakers' Co-operative or present proof of equivalent film experience.
-Applicants must not be currently enrolled in any full-time school or university program.
The project must be:
- Ten (10) minutes or less.
- Fictional in nature (this can include parts of comedy, animation and docu-drama).
- The medium, theme, and subject matter are up to the applicant, provided the project is suitable for general audiences.

Projects not accepted: Experimental, animation, documentary or commissioned films will not be considered. Projects must not have started before the SFVP call date.
Department of Tourism, Heritage and Culture contribution:

70% of the contribution upon signature of the agreement;
30% upon receipt of the fine cut copy and final cost report.
A minimum of 10% of the production budget must be invested in cash. The 10% can come from other funding sources such as the Canada Council, NB Arts Board, Telefilm Canada, personal funds, family and friends.
Important Dates:
Application due date: March 02, 2018 (email one copy of your proposal (word doc, word docx or PDF) to info@nbfilmcoop.com, no hard copies please)

Process:
Applications are due on March 02, 2018. No exceptions.
On March 30, 2018, applicants will be notified if they have been placed on the shortlist. If so, they will receive script notes. They will also be contacted by the SFVP team to discuss the script notes and the next steps required in the development of their projects.
The applicant will have until April 27, 2018 to work on revisions to their script. As the SFVP is a professional development opportunity, it is important that applicants be open to professional feedback as the process is intended to mirror the process that filmmakers will go through in the real world with funders and broadcasters.
On May 11, 2018, short listed applicants will be notified if their application is successful. If a recipient does not have the required training, they will receive a letter confirming their conditional acceptance to receive a grant. -------------------------
The Monday Night Film Series presents WONDERSTRUCK on Monday February 26th at 7:30pm in Tilley 102, UNB.
Director Todd Haynes (Carol) has created a movie that is a meticulously curated pastiche that spans generations, genres and styles. Based on the young-adult book by Brian Selznick (The Invention of Hugo Cabret), who adapted the screenplay, the two narratives belong to Rose (Millicent Simmonds) and Ben (Oakes Fegley), 12-year-old children living in 1927 and 1977, respectively. Rose is deaf and living unhappily in New Jersey with her strict father (James Urbaniak), and spends most of her time going to the cinema and collecting photos of her favorite movie star (Julianne Moore).
Ben lives in Minnesota, has recently lost his mother (Michelle Williams), and is consumed with curiosity about his father, whom he never knew. After a freak accident leaves Ben deaf, he and Rose both embark on parallel journeys to New York City, in search of their idol/missing parent (though it seems there’s ultimately not much of a difference). Though they don’t exactly find what they were looking for, their fates intersect around a certain “cabinet of curiosities,” and they find other sympathetic souls along the way.
There’s a layer of feeling running through the picture that builds as the narrative unfolds, and when everything falls into place its almost overwhelming. - Norman Wilner, NOW Toronto
This term, 15 limited release, independent foreign & Canadian films will be shown. Admission is $8/film, but a half-yearly $12 student film society membership reduces admission cost to $5/film. The series is open to all. Memberships are available at Tilley 102 every Monday night.
