CINEMA POLITICA
https://www.cinemapolitica.org/blog/network/call-submissions-2018-lookin...
GENERAL CALL
Cinema Politica is seeking submissions of politically engaged independent films that combine a strong creative vision with an equally strong political perspective. We are interested in works of any length that contribute to justice and equality movements, activism, knowledge and discourse. We are particularly interested in films that offer structural critiques of oppressive ideological and material systems, and those that explore stories not usually featured in mainstream media or at commercial film festivals.
Cinema Politica is interested in advancing progressive political agendas through film, supporting independent filmmakers who privilege under-represented and peripheral stories and perspectives, and we are committed to collaborating with movement-building groups and organizations. We are dedicated to ensuring diverse representation both on screen and behind the lens, and as such we strongly encourage filmmakers of colour, Indigenous, Black, queer and trans makers, and artists from any under-represented and under-served groups to submit their work. Lastly, we strongly encourage filmmakers to include a note about their relationship to the community and/or subject(s) represented in their work, as CP strongly supports long-term relationship-building, community-artist collaboration, and committed reciprocity in filmmaking practices.
SIDEBAR CALL: FIRST PEOPLES, FIRST SCREENS, 2nd EDITION
Cinema Politica is also currently seeking submissions of independent, Canadian-based Indigenous works for the second edition of our First Peoples First Screens program, which is funded through a grant from the Canada Council for the Arts.
First Peoples First Screens is a specially curated program that will feature emerging and established Indigenous artists working across what is currently known as Canada.* Working with Indigenous curators and collaborators, we will select and screen a selection of works of varying lengths and approaches, including animation, fiction, documentary and experimental. Building off the incredible success of the first edition of this programming initiative in 2015, CP will once again work with Indigenous curators to co-create a powerful program of inventive and provocative Indigenous cinema that answers Ojibwe writer, broadcaster and curator Jesse Wente’s call “nothing about us without us.”
First Peoples First Screens is a program that seeks to support Indigenous artists, while creating screening spaces of solidarity in order to contribute to the self-determination of aboriginal communities ignored or maligned by mainstream media and who continue to face and fight against continuing colonial government policies and white settler racism. This program of self-representation takes its lead from Indigenous curators, artists, activists, storytellers, leaders and community-builders.
* While Cinema Politica is particularly interested in submissions from what is now known as Canada, we welcome works from international Indigenous artists as well.
SUBMITTING WORK:
The deadline for submissions to both above calls is July 15, 2018.
