Also awarded were past Film Co-op member Denis Theriault, through The NS Inside Out LGBT Film Festival and, graduates of the Nova Scoita Community College where, Silver Wave organizer and programmer Chris Campbell teaches film.
Toronto/Montréal, June 12, 2019 – Telefilm Canada and the Talent Fund are pleased to announce the 2019 English- and French-language projects selected under the Talent to Watch Program with a total of 31 first feature films and narrative web projects from across the country.
“As greater inclusion is a key priority, this year’s cohort of talent is one that better reflects the rich diversity of our country,” said Christa Dickenson, Executive Director, Telefilm Canada. “Beyond reaching gender parity in this cohort of projects, they also represent the strength of the regions and their cultural vibrancy. In addition, there are multiple projects with stories and voices from the LGBTQ2+ communities.”
“This year, we’re also excited to work with new partners like Vancouver International Film Festival, Prism Prize – The Academy of Canadian Cinema & Television and Bande Sonimage, just to name a few from which our projects were selected from,” Christa added. “As we continue to grow the program, and our talent pipeline, we look forward to supporting stories that represent all people of our nation.”
The Talent Fund, in support of the Talent to Watch Program, has been championing emerging creators since its inception in 2012. Launching the careers of many emerging professionals, the Fund aims to support rising stars through corporate and private donations to ensure Canada’s filmmakers continue to create and thrive.
“Investing in the next generation of Canadian storytellers is the very essence of the Talent Fund,” says Christine Magee, Chair of the Talent Fund. “This Fund has allowed many emerging talent materialize their dreams through a feature film or narrative web series, and to date, we have supported close to 150 projects! All this is made possible with the generous contributions of our many partners and individual donors.”
Selection process
Creative teams from across the country submitted potential projects to one of the Program’s designated partners. From there, each partner submitted projects to Telefilm for consideration by the decision jury.
The Festival Selection Stream allows emerging filmmakers whose short films have been selected at key festival to submit a project directly to Telefilm for jury consideration.
From March to May, three separate peer-based juries were held comprised of industry representatives from English, French and Indigenous groups across Canada. Each jury strove to maintain a diverse and inclusive portfolio, while also ensuring exceptional quality of content.
This year’s designated partners include Academy Apprenticeship for Women Directors, Adam Beach Film Institute, Atlantic Filmmakers Cooperative, Bande Sonimage, Bosa Centre for Film & Animation, Capilano University, Calgary Society Of Independent Filmmakers, Canadian Film Centre, Caribbean Tales, CineVic Society of Independent Filmmakers, Cineworks Independent Filmmakers Society, Confederation College, Coop Spira, Creative Women Workshops Association, Doc Circuit Montréal, École des Médias, Female Eye Film Festival, Festival International du Film Black de Montréal, Film PEI, Humber Institute of Technology and Advanced Learning, Independent Filmmakers Co-operative of Ottawa Inc., Inside Out LGBT Film Festival, Institut national de l’image et du son, Le Labo, Main Film, Mel Hoppenheim School of Cinema – Concordia University, National Screen Institute – Canada, New Brunswick Filmmakers Co-operative, Newfoundland Independent Film Coop, Nova Scotia Community College, NSCAD University, Nunavut Film Development Corp., Okanagan Society of Independent Filmmaking, On Screen Manitoba, Paraloeil, Paved Arts, Prism Prize – The Academy of Canadian Cinema & Television, Queen’s University Film and Media, ReelWorld Film Festival Inc., Ryerson University, Saskatchewan Film Pool Cooperative, Saskatchewan Media Production Industry Association, SAW Video Media Art Centre, Sheridan College, Southern Alberta Institute of Technology, St. John’s International Women’s Film Festival, The Film and Video Arts Society of Alberta, The Harold Greenberg Fund, Toronto Film School, Toronto International Film Festival, Toronto Reel Asian International Film Festival, UBC Film Production, Université de Montréal, University of Regina, Vancouver Film School, Vancouver International Film Festival, Wapikoni Mobile, Western Arctic Moving Pictures, WIFT-Atlantic, Winnipeg Film Group, York University and Yukon Film Society.

BRIAN CARTY FILM VOLUNTEER RECOGNITION AWARD
The NB Film Co-op, Picaroons and the Silver Wave Film Festival are proud to announce that the Picaroons Recognition Award for a person, group or organization who has contributed significantly to film and video in New Brunswick in a volunteer capacity (Cash Award of $500 thanks to our SWFF sponsor Picaroons) is now called the Brian Carty Film Volunteer Recognition Award.
We will honour Film Co-op member Brian Carty every year with this award at SWFF. Sadly, Brian died two years ago after hitting a moose.
We thank Picaroons for their support and dedication to supporting the arts in New Brunswick in so many different ways on so many different levels.
Not only was Brian a filmmaker, musician and singer, he loved nothing better than to help his son out with an essay or a Picaroons growler.
Please nominate a deserving person, group or organization that goes that extra mile to help others in film and video in NB. (Note: those who have won this award in the far past can't win it again so check to make sure you are not nominating someone who has already won!)
Email your nomination to info@nbfilmcoop.com

SPOTLIGHT - SCRIPTS AND SCREENS
https://www.facebook.com/events/450335122177429/
On June 15th, 2019 at 7:00 pm, Grey Rabbit Theatre Co. in association with the New Brunswick Film Co-op will be hosting another Script and Screen event! This quarterly event is designed to engage writers and discuss the creation of their scripts. Film and theatre writers are welcome.
Grey Rabbit Theatre Co. hopes to promote both film and theatre with this project. GRTC founder Laura-Beth Bird says that “many new scriptwriters are unsure of their work.” She hopes that “this writing lab will help them discuss their idea’s.” Bird believes that discussing storylines and promoting collaboration and conversation will help the community grow. Both theatre and film experience the same creation problems. This lab series hopes to encourage productive discourse and ideas.
This event will take place in NB Film Co-op resource centre, located in the basement of the Charlotte Streets Arts Centre on June 15th, 2019 at 7:00 pm.
This event is FREE. Open to Film Co-op members and non-members. Donuts and Coffee will be provided.
"Scripts and Screens has been a huge help in getting feedback about my writing and I always look forward to seeing what the other members are working on. I feel inspired after every meeting". - Michael Garrett
"I have to say, Scripts and Screens is doing everything from improving my work, to ensuring there's progress being made. It's both a humbling and great experience to sit among other established screenwriters and have them comment and strengthen my work. Without it, I doubt I would be capable of writing a project." - Kyle MacDonald
UPDATE YOUR CAST AND CREW PROFILE TODAY!
So you've joined the NB Film Co-op. You've taken a bunch of workshops. You've gone to networking events. But you're still unsure how to actually get involved with a film shoot.
One way to get your name out there is to register for the NB Film Co-op Cast and Crew Profile. It's a database where filmmakers can see a list of members who are able to fill in various cast and crew positions. It's simple to fill out and in no time your name will be made available to all filmmakers who are looking for cast and crew for their upcoming projects. It has recently been modified to allow new members with little or no experience create a profile, and it also allows members to fill in a more complete resume if they wish.
It's also beneficial for our more experienced members too. It is a place where commercial filmmakers can go to search for people to hire for paid shoots, and it gives members a platform to self promote themselves and their work.
So please, take a few minutes to fill out your profile and help the Co-op promote you!
This benefit is for Film Co-op members in good standing with their dues paid up. Email info@nbfilmcoop.com to find out more info.
Note: If you want to get calls from outside production companies and local production companies looking for creative crew, please ask Cat to be put on her film job short list. She can't refer you if you don't let her know.
