Workshop Description:

From Gone With The Wind to The Godfather to Lord of the Rings, some of the most lasting and powerful cinematic stories began as written prose. The task of transforming those characters and stories from the pages of a novel to a screen, however, is no small feat. This workshop will explore the fundamental differences between the art forms of written prose and screenwriting. It will cover techniques to ensure that the novel's core characters and characteristics are at the heart of every scene and remain the driving force behind the narrative.  Perhaps most importantly, it will identify when it is imperative to veer slightly from the original text to make it work as a story for the screen.

Instructor’s Biography:

Tony Sekulich is a screenwriter and novelist with more than 25 years experience in the field. Upon graduating from the CFC, Tony was hired to adapt the Stevie Cameron bestselling nonfiction book Blue Trust into a feature film script. Around the same time, Tony wrote for the TV series Robson Arms. Tony's feature length screenplays have been optioned by producers such as Sam Grana and Elizabeth Yake. In 2012, Tony developed his half-hour comedy series Book lub with CTV/Bell Media. In 2013 he earned a Leo Award nomination for Best Screenwriting in an Animated Series for his episode, A Wanderer No More for the APTN animated series Animism: The Gods Lake. In 2017 Tony's debut novel The New Twenty earned a Watty Award. Tony is a former member and President of the New Brunswick Filmmaker’s Co-op who now lives in Toronto where is tortured endlessly by his beloved Maple Leafs.
